Multiphysics Metastructures

While metastructures can provide outstanding performance through their unique characteristics, sometimes the versatility to cover various situations is often in practical applications. Unfortunately, metastructures relying on artificial microstructures with their shapes already fixed, have a critical weakness in terms of versatility. To overcome this limitation, our lab is conducting various studies on multiphysics metastructures, incorporating not only solid mechanics but also electromagnetic and other physical phenomena. For instance, we explore technologies like creating metastructures with piezoelectric materials and adjusting their properties freely through electric control. Through such approaches, our aim is to implement not only exceptional characteristics but also smarter and more adaptive mechanical systems.
