Since the unique characteristics of metastructures stem from the microstructure, design of the microstructure is indeed a crucial aspect in metastructure research. However, the impact of changes in the microstructure on the properties of the metastructure is highly complex, and sometimes even slight shape variations can result in drastic changes in characteristics. Therefore, relying on trial-and-error for design is almost impossible, and a customized design approach for metastructures that can achieve the desired characteristics is essential. In MetaStruct Lab, we are actively developing various design techniques, ranging from widely used automated design methods such as Topology Optimization to advanced AI-based design techniques.
